Why Local/Organic?
At Alex and Dan Catering Inc. we aim to provide you with the highest quality product and the best service possible. One way we ensure that we meet our mandate is by sourcing locally and/or organically grown produce and meat. However, not all of the food we provide is “certified” organic despite being farmed using organic methods. This is because certification is often too expensive for small producers and is heavily criticized for watering-down the high standards that many farmers create for themselves. As a rule, we always source local organic products first, followed by local non-certified organic products, followed by imported organics.
At Alex and Dan Catering we guarantee that:
- We always provide locally and naturally grown meat.
- We provide local and organic produce (unless a menu ingredient requires exception!).
- We always buy Fair Trade organic coffee and tea.
- We always buy organic and/or local dairy products.
Why local? By sourcing our products locally, and ensuring that organic methods of food production have been used, we achieve a number of important goals.
- That all of our produce is free of harmful fertilizers and pesticides.
- That all of our meat comes from ethically raised animals that are not injected with antibiotics and growth hormones.
- We ensure an income for local farmers, who on average have a difficult time sustaining their agricultural operation.
- We create accountability by developing a relationship with the farmers who produce our food. This ensures that you are receiving ethical, fresh, nutrient rich, and delicious ingredients.
- By buying locally, we reduce the number of miles the food you savour has traveled. On average, food travels about 2,500 km from the farm to your plate. Our goal is to provide you with ingredients that travel no more than 200 km.
